Private Party Transfer

Dear Valued Customer -

Due to the large volume of business on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays we highly recommend that you Avoid These Days to do a private party transfer. Wait times to complete a PPT on the above mentioned days can be as long as 3 hours.

If you would like to sell a firearm to another individual, this is called a Private Party Transfer (PPT).

Private Party Transfer Fee: $35 Total ($25 Transfer Fee + $10 Processing)

A PPT must be conducted through a fully licensed California firearms dealer such as Gunther Guns. Failure to do so is a violation of California State law. The buyer must meet normal firearm purchase requirements. There is a ten day waiting period which begins on the day that the buyer's background check is submitted.

In the event that the buyer does not pass his/her background check, the seller will be required to pass a background check ($25 fee) in order take back possession of firearm. There is a ten day waiting period which begins on the day that the seller's background check is submitted.


The seller and buyer must be present at Gunther Guns in order to complete a Private Party Transfer. We need to get copies of both of your driver's licenses. If the firearm is a handgun, the buyer will need to have an HSC card (Handgun Safety Certificate) or be exempt. Also, both parties are required to sign documents.

If there are no other customers ahead of you, a typical private party transfer should take approximately 30 minutes. PPT's are processed at Gunther Guns between the hours of 10am to 5pm Tuesday thru Sunday.

NOTE: Saturdays and Sundays are busy days and you can expect at least a 1 hour wait to begin the PPT process. We highly recommend that you come in to complete a PPT on Wednesdays and Thursdays between 1:30pm and 3:30pm.
