Less than Lethal Self Defense

Law abiding citizens of California are severely restricted by State legislators with regards to obtaining a concealed carry permit. A concealed carry permit or CCW enables an individual to carry a loaded handgun on their person.

Almost every day a customer will ask us: "How hard is it to get a concealed carry permit in California?"
The short answer is, it's nearly impossible to get a CCW unless you meet the following criteria and there is still no guarantee that you will be approved.

  • If you own a business that deals with relatively large amounts of cash on a daily basis then you have a pretty good chance of being approved for a restricted concealed weapons permit. You will have to prove with bank receipts that you are making cash deposits on a regular basis.
  • If you are a jewelry store owner or deal in precious metals that you will be transporting on a regular basis than you may be approved for a restricted CCW.
  • A physician who travels with prescription pads may also qualify under certain circumstances.
  • If you have been threatened or injured by an individual and a police report was filed than you may be able to obtain a temporary CCW.
  • Attorneys whose lives have been threatened may also be eligible to obtain a temporary CCW.

As you can imagine, most people do not meet the above mentioned criteria which leaves less than lethal forms of defense.

Let's discuss the three main types of less than lethal defense so you can make an educated decision on which might be right for you.

Pepper Spray -

The active ingredient in pepper spray is capsaicin. Pepper spray is a lachrymatory agent - it irritates the eyes causing tears, pain, and temporary blindness. It also effects the sinuses and throat causing coughing, swelling and drainage. Pepper spray is used in policing, riot control and personal self-defense, including defense against dogs, coyotes and bears. Its inflammatory effects cause the eyes to close, taking away vision. This temporary blindness allows law enforcement personnel to more easily restrain subjects and permits people using pepper spray for self-defense an opportunity to escape. Although considered a less-than-lethal agent, it has been deadly in rare cases, and concerns have been raised about a number of deaths where being pepper sprayed may have been a contributing factor.

Pros -

  • Pepper spray is inexpensive costing under $20
  • Pepper spray can be deployed at a distance of 12 feet.
  • Very effective against dogs, coyotes and other small animals. If you enjoy walking your dog and need an effective way to protect yourself and beloved pet from attack, then pepper spray may be the perfect choice.

Cons -

  • Generally it expires in 3 months. Pepper spray does not last long. When you need it most and frantically press the button on your small can - only a dribble may come out. We have tested older cans of pepper spray and they simply do not function properly.
  • California limits the aerosol can size to only 2.5 ounces or less.
  • Police officers are trained during academy to continue fighting after being sprayed with pepper spray. In many cases, if your attacker is angry enough, on drugs or his adrenaline is pumping - he too will be able to attack and injure you even after being sprayed with pepper spray.
  • Pepper spray can be taken away from you by an attacker and used against you.

Stun Gun
-

An electro shock weapon or stun gun delivers a high voltage shock to temporarily incapacitate muscle control and function. Stun guns come in several sizes and shapes including handheld, baton and flashlight combinations. Two prongs are touched to the skin to deliver a high voltage and low amperage shock.

Pros -

  • Stun guns or electro shock weapons are relatively inexpensive costing between $29 and $200.
  • When activated, stun guns give off an unnerving sound and visible electrical field. Just hearing and seeing an electro shock weapon being fired is enough to make many people think: "I don't want to be touched by that!"
  • Stun guns are more reliable and last longer than pepper spray.

Cons -

  • Stun guns require the user to physically touch the person or animal that may be a threat with both electric prongs. Having zero distance between you and an attacker is enough for some people to completely rule out this choice of less than lethal defense.
  • It is very likely that a person or animal that comes in contact with the prongs of a stun gun will immediately jerk away which will cease the electrical shock.
  • Are handheld stun guns really effective or are they just a false sense of security? Type in stun guns into YouTube and you will find hundreds of videos of high school and college kids stunning each other with electro shock weapons. A person will run up to a friend then quickly touch a stun gun to their skin. The "victim" screams and jumps away from the prongs then chases his friend around using some choice expletives.
  • In order for a stun gun or electro shock weapon to be effective you have to literally overpower your attacker pressing the electric prongs to their body and holding the prongs in place to prevent violent moves that would cease the electrical connection. Easier said than done!
  • Your stun gun can be taken away by an attacker and used against you.

TASER
- (Our #1 Choice For Less Than Lethal Self Defense)

A Taser - also known as a Conducted Electrical Weapon (CEW) is an electroshock weapon that fires two small dart electrodes that are directly attached by wires to the handheld main housing. Tasers deliver a powerful electric current to disrupt voluntary control of muscles causing "neuromuscular incapacitation". Being struck by a Taser delivers a hyper-stimulation of sensory and motor nerves, resulting in strong involuntary muscle contractions.

Pros -

  • Tasers are extremely powerful and effective devices used by law enforcement personnel all over the world.
  • Tasers can be used on an attacker who is standing 15 feet away. You don't have to physically touch your assailant like you would with a stun gun.
  • In addition to the dart projectiles - most tasers also have stun gun style prongs on the handheld main housing.
  • Certain models also come with a red laser beam which helps in aiming the device and ensuring that the darts hit their target.
  • Hearing the words: "Don't come any closer or I will Tase you!" is universally feared by criminals across the globe. We have all seen episodes of COPS on TV and witnessed the effects of someone being tased. No one wants to be tased... including bad guys.

Cons -

  • Tasers are expensive. $399 and up for a high quality model you can rely on. (Is you life worth $399?)
  • If someone is wearing very thick clothing or multiple layers of clothing it is possible that the darts will not fully penetrate. Fortunately for us lucky folks who live in California - people do not wear thick winter style clothing. It's not uncommon in California to see people dressed in shorts and a t-shirt in December!
